Artist Statement
Since 2001 Sue Kneebone has been engaging in site specific art installations in response to various urban and regional environments in Australia. Sue’s process of working with installations involves a particular emphasis on learning about the cultural habitat and histories of the local environment. Themes have included introduced species, narratives of human intervention, legacy of farming practices, environmental degradation, built versus natural environments and the transformation of natural materials into sites of reflection, regrowth and renewal. One of the most rewarding processes Sue has found from this type of art practice is that it allows for public interactions and the impromptu gathering of local stories that in turn help inform the works. The installations are temporary interventions in the environment creating unexpected encounters and a dialogue with the public that extends beyond the traditional boundaries of the gallery space.
More recently Sue has been transforming clay into other media to incorporate digital and multimedia techniques.
