Simon Lloyd

Biography

Having trained in the United Kingdom as a furniture designer, Simon arrived in Australia in 1984. Working both in the furniture industry in Melbourne and in his own private practice, he established his company Sisu in 1995. Working across a wide range of materials often on a small domestic scale, he prefers working with small manufacturing industries were the quality is a given to research and develop new products. Lately Simon has also ventured into a more sculptural realm (Tactile Art Award) again to explore materiality.

Artist statement

My work revolvers around the manipulation and exploration matter. Outcomes are purely functional but led in part by the behavioural qualities of the material l am working with. I favour natural materials those with texture, grain and fibre that determine ways of working and construction. Recent projects have included work with vitrified clay forms, chipping and fracturing the surface and exploration of industrial felts by cutting and expanding. During an era when mass consumerism is disassociating people from materials and an understanding how they respond l aim to make implicit, material process and behaviour within the finished objects l design.
