Prue Venables

Biography

Initially Prue interests lay in Science and music, but after a period of travelling and searching, she found a new and invigorating focus in the making of pots where all of her interests and knowledge could now combine together.

Her focus has always been on the making of functional objects. They seem of such human scale and contact, providing such scope for imaginative thinking. In science and music, as well as ceramics, Prue learned that each spark of expression or idea requires long hours of work and development to reach its full potential and allow something exciting to emerge.

Artist Statement

A search for simplicity and quietness, and essential stillness, motivates my work. The making of functional pots, the exploration of objects to be held and used, alongside a search for new and innovative forms. Provides a lifetime of challenge and excitement.

A beautiful cup seems simple and yet is capable of gently holding and reflecting so much ceremony and personal connection. I enjoy the contradictory nature of these pieces where the sprung tension of the throwing remains clear, but the origins of forms are uncertain. I have a reference to 18th and 19th century English industrial pottery as well as to more contemporary and familiar metal and plastic vessels.
